1996 Israel Election: Labor beats Likud by a whisker!
Objective measurement:
Peres returns the Labor Party with a slim majority.

Why:
Reconciliation moves gaining momentum particularly amongst the younger voters. Perception of achieving peace at long last under Peres.
Further comments:
The election results from the Information Division of the Israel Foreign Ministry shows that Netanyahu had around 30,000 more votes than Peres. The Labor party won 34 seats, however, against Likud's 32.
